The Good Boob Bible | MYA Cosmetic Surgery News & Knowledge Base

A book has been released this week which potentially marks the end to many years of taboo around the eponymous ‘boob job’. The book titled The Good Boob Bible was written by Miles Berry, Dai Davies – both Cosmetic Surgeons – and Maxine Heasman, and is described as a “complete guide to breast augmentation surgery”. The information inside is of course nothing new; however the publication of such a book could potentially mark the end to years of taboo around cosmetic surgery.
In the past Cosmetic Surgery has often been viewed as unnecessary surgery and therefore as a selfish choice. However for most women the decision to have surgery is not one that they take lightly. As one of the authors Miles Berry states “somebody willing to accept the risk of complications and a permanent scar is clearly unhappy: their individual risk-benefit ratio has shifted.” For those who work in the Cosmetic Surgery industry this is a refreshing point of view. Too often the media trivialise surgery and undermine people’s decisions to go under the knife, however Miles’ point of view really does attest to the consideration behind the decision to have cosmetic surgery.
Another interesting point raised by Miles is the psychological implications behind a decision to have surgery. Elective breast surgery is often considered vanity, especially in a world in which breast cancer is prolific. However Miles poses the question as to the “psychological drivers behind women seeking reconstruction after breast cancer and those after children”. Although the reasons behind both wanting surgery are different, the common motivation for wanting surgery is to restore femininity. Therefore it leads you to wonder whether elective breast surgery is actually as ‘vain’ as it is often accused of being.
At MYA our primary focus is always on our patients and we endeavour to make sure that any questions, worries or queries that they have are addressed fully as soon as they arise. Our forum is unique in that it offers women a method by which for the patients to access information about the breast augmentation procedure and to meet others who have undergone breast surgery. However other than this there is little other way of obtaining information about procedures as society does little to help those who choose to undergo surgery. This book marks a change to this lack of information and finally offers some support for the women who choose to have a breast augmentation.
