More than 17,000 women about 30,000 carriers in France were withdrawing their PIP breast implants . This is indicated by the last balance sheet in late September by the Agency of Medicines and Health Products (MSNA), AFP reported on Saturday, December 7.
A total of 29,777 prostheses were withdrawn in 17 135 women at the end of September, including 12,599 for prevention. Among the implants removed, 7,540 were classified as "defective", a rate of "failure" of 25.4%, similar to that observed in the previous assessment conducted in late May. Rupture of the external implant remains the most frequently observed abnormality. It was found in 4599 for all defective prostheses 7540, 2123 while in case of non-compliant silicone gel seeping through the wrapper.
These preventive withdrawals began in the spring of 2010, after the suspension of the marketing of these implants. They are accelerated after the decision, in December 2011, the Ministry of Health to provide preventive withdrawal to all women with PIP implants, even in the absence of clinical signs of deterioration of the implant.
