PIP prostheses: already 12,600 preventive explantations - Case of PIP breast implants - Destination Santé

Between 2001 and the end of September 2013, a total of 17,135 women underwent explantation at least one prosthesis brand Poly Implant Prostheses (PIP) , in France. According to the latest report of MSNA on this subject on 29 577 explanted prostheses, the adverse reaction rates observed is 16.3%.
Of the 17 135 women who underwent explantation of their prostheses, 12,599 were made ​​as a precaution. In other words, they showed no particular sign of warning. In about 20% of cases of preventive explantations , "there was discovery of a malfunction of the prosthesis (broken, oozing ...) and / or side effects not detected by the tests before this intervention," said the National Security Agency of Medicines and Health Products (MSNA).
Still many side effects?
Furthermore, and again according to the MSNA, 29,577 prostheses were explanted at the end of September 2013. And a total of 7999 failures for 7540 implants have been reported. Accuracy of importance, the same prosthesis may hold several problems: the device breaks, leaks, reversals or color changes. The rate of PIP implants failing - among explanted - amounted to 25.4% today. Some women have been victims of adverse effects caused by their prostheses. They were 3047 in late September 2013 and had been 4816 of these reactions, particularly inflammatory.
A total of 74 cases of mammary adenocarcinomas was reported to the Agency in women with silicone gel prostheses PIP. A case of anaplastic large cell lymphoma was also recorded in November 2011. This is also his report which was the cause of explantation preventive recommendations. No other cases of this type of cancer have been reported to ANSM since.
